Description

Astafy immediately suspects Yemelya, but the latter tearfully and passionately denies his guilt.

Overcome by shame and terrible remorse, Yemelya goes on a drinking binge and begins to waste away before Astafy’s eyes from grief and illness, yet he continues to live with the soldier, who, despite his hurt, nurses the dying man.
