На кладбище, над свежей глиняной насыпью стоит новый крест из дуба, крепкий, тяжелый, гладкий.

It is April, the days are grey; the monuments of the cemetery, a spacious district one, are still visible from afar thro-ugh the bare trees, and a cold wind rings a porcelain wreath at the foot of the cross.

Апрель, дни серые; памятники кладбища, просторного уездного, ещё далеко видны сквозь голые деревья, и холодный ветер звенит фарфоровым венком у подножия креста.

Set into the cross itself is a rather large, convex porcelain medallion, and in the medallion is a photographic portrait of a schoolgirl with joyful, strikingly lively eyes.

В самый же крест вделан довольно большой, выпуклый фарфоровый медальон, а в медальоне фотографический портрет гимназистки с радостными, поразитель-но живыми глазами.

No one danced at balls as Olya Meshcherskaya did, no one skated as she did, no one was courted at balls as much as she was, and for some reason, the lower classes loved no one as they loved her.

During her last winter, Olya Meshcherskaya went quite out of her mind with fun, as they said in the school too.

Последнюю свою зиму Оля Мещерская совсем сошла с ума от веселья, как говорили и в гимназии.

The winter was snowy, sunny, and frosty; the sun sank early behind the tall fir forest of the snowy school garden, invariably fine, radiant, promising frost and sun for the morrow as well, walks on Sobornaya Street, the skating rink in the city garden, the rosy evening, music, and this crowd gliding in all directions on the rink, in which Olya Meshcherskaya seemed the most carefree, the happiest.

Зима была снежная, солнечная, морозная, рано опускалось солнце за высокий ельник снежного гимназического сада, неизменно погожее, лучистое, обещающее и на завтра мороз и солнце, гулянье на Соборной улице, каток в городском саду, розовый вечер, музыку и эту во все стороны скользящую на катке толпу, в которой Оля Мещерская казалась самой беззаботной, самой счастливой.

And so, one day during the long break, when she was rushing like a whirlwind through the assembly hall away from the first-formers who were chasing her and squealing blissfully, she was unexpectedly summoned to the headmistress.

И вот, однажды, на большой перемене, когда она вихрем носилась по сборному залу от гонявшихся за ней и блаженно визжавших первоклассниц, её неожидан-но позвали к начальнице.

She stopped in mid-run, took only one deep breath, with a quick and already habitual feminine movement adjusted her hair, pulled the corners of her apron toward her shoulders, and, her eyes shining, ran upstairs.

The headmistress, youthful-looking but grey-haired, sat calmly with knitting in her hands at her desk, beneath the Tsar’s portrait.

Начальница, моложавая, но седая, спокойно сидела с вязаньем в руках за письменным столом, под царским портретом.

“Good day, Mademoiselle Meshcherskaya,” she said in French, without raising her eyes from her knitting. “I am, unfortunately, not for the first time obliged to call you here to speak with you regarding your conduct.”
